Welcome from the Head of School
Dear Parent:

These are extraordinary times. Technology . . . information . . . globalization . . . exponential change . . . these are some of the forces that will shape the world of tomorrow, your children’s world, in ways we can’t presently foresee. The question is, how do we prepare our children to successfully navigate a future that is largely undefined and unknown? This is the transcendent question for all of education as we walk through the gateway to the 21st century.

What does a world class, 21st century education look like?

Well it turns out that Maria Montessori was remarkably visionary when she developed her method more than 100 years ago, because a Montessori education like the one Red Oaks provides for students from age 3 through grade 6, looks a lot like the emerging consensus on what students need for success in the 21st century. For example, Montessori’s student-centered, experientially-based classrooms with open-ended work periods actively cultivate higher order thought processes and outcomes like critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity; these are among the essential assets identified by The Partnership for 21st Century Skills, the leading collaborative of business, education and policy thought leaders advocating for a 21st century educational framework. Similarly, the 21st century learner, like the Montessori learner, is adaptable, self-directed, socially competent and responsible. In short, at Red Oaks our Montessori roots have positioned us favorably for the requirements of a 21st century education, and we are committed as always, to adapting and building on that foundation as we move forward.

Red Oaks is also a warm, caring, and nurturing school community. Our students love coming to school. They love to learn. Our teachers seek to unfold and encourage, not mold and construct. Our parents believe passionately in fine education and are actively involved in the process. Our Board, our leadership, and our administration provide vision and momentum while maintaining a financially healthy institution. Together, we help our children to become caring and confident achievers, well prepared for continued growth in the classroom, and beyond.

At Red Oaks we have created a school environment that will securely guide your children to independence and success in work and in life. We support them as they learn and think, and watch with pride as they learn to fly. Our promise to them—and to you—is: You will leave here soaring.

Cordially,
Marilyn E. Stewart
