Red Oaks Alumnus Postpones College to Lead Obama Effort in New Hampshire
by Bassam Gergi, ROS class of ‘02
Bassam Gergi, a Red Oaks/MCH Alumnus from the Class of 2002 is having an exciting year! In a recent email Bassam related the following:
I am currently a Field Organizer in Rochester NH, the fourth biggest town in NH. I am in charge of organizing it as well as a couple of smaller surrounding towns for the Obama Campaign. Throughout high school I was politically involved, serving as Editor-in-Chief of the "Exeter Political Review", as a member of my Democratic Committee, and then last summer as an intern for Obama in New Hampshire. This past spring, before I graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, I served as an intern in Obama's D.C. Senate office. I finished my credits there, and when I left in June to graduate from Exeter, I was offered a job as a paid staffer on Senator Obama's campaign. I am the youngest paid staffer in the state of New Hampshire and probably one of the youngest staffers nationwide. I'll be in Rochester, working out of my office until November 5th, and then I'll have to decide what I do next. My job consists of organizing events and all voter contact for my region. Rochester is a town of approximately 36,000 people, and where, in 2004, Kerry beat Bush by only fourteen votes. So every day, is quite literally a struggle which may determine the outcome of this election. Bassam wishes to share the following quote with us.
Our answer is the world's hope; it is to rely on youth. The cruelties and the obstacles of this swiftly changing planet will not yield to obsolete dogmas and outworn slogans. It cannot be moved by those who cling to a present which is already dying, who prefer the illusion of security to the excitement and danger which comes with even the most peaceful progress. This world demands the qualities of youth: not a time of life but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.
~Bobby Kennedy "Day of Affirmation", speech, University of Capetown, South Africa Professor Nora Colton, Bassam's mother, writes: Bassam is delaying his start at college because he has been named a Regional Coordinator for the Obama campaign for the state of New Hampshire. There are only three regional coordinators in the state. He has field consultants working for him. At his first house party, he had over 100 people, which is a record. The campaign people think he's a fabulous problem solver. He's making a NICE salary at age 18! Please take a moment to "Google" Bassam Gergi online and to check out the links that follow.
