After School Care Staff (2026-2027)

Position Overview:

The Red Oaks School, a PreK–8 independent school in Morristown, NJ, seeks After School Care Staff. This is a part-time, hourly position, Monday through Friday, approximately 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM (with flexibility around start and end times).

This role is based at our Lower School Campus, serving students in Early Childhood through Grade 4.

In collaboration with the after-school team, staff members help create a fun, positive, and nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported, and genuinely cared for at the end of the school day.

About Aftercare at Red Oaks:

Aftercare at Red Oaks is intentionally different from the regular school day. While school hours are structured and academic, aftercare is designed as a home-away-from-home—a space where children can decompress, connect, create, move, and relax after a full day of learning.

Families entrust us with their children for a significant portion of the day, often until 6:00 PM. The right person understands the importance of this responsibility and approaches it with care, warmth, and intention. Children arrive at aftercare with different needs: some need movement and outdoor play, some need quiet creativity or rest, and others need connection, reassurance, or affection. The right person is observant, emotionally attuned, and able to respond thoughtfully to what each child needs to feel safe, comfortable, respected, and cared for.

Creativity is essential in this role. Aftercare staff are encouraged to bring ideas, imagination, and flexibility to the program—whether through games, art, storytelling, outdoor play, or spontaneous moments of joy. Staff should also feel comfortable stepping into a leadership role, guiding groups of children with confidence, warmth, and clear expectations.

Maria Montessori believed she could make the greatest positive difference in the world by working with children, recognizing that early childhood experiences shape a person’s sense of self, relationships, and place in the world. We share this belief deeply. This role is not simply supervision—it is meaningful, relational, and deeply influential in a child’s daily life.

Responsibilities:

• Work Monday through Friday, approximately 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM
• Supervise students and ensure a safe, caring, and emotionally supportive environment at all times
• Create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where children feel secure and seen
• Monitor snack time and assist younger students with handwashing and snacks
• Assist older students with homework as needed
• Follow a schedule of age-appropriate activities while remaining responsive to children’s needs
• Engage students in creative play, imaginative activities, and movement
• Take initiative and lead small or large groups with confidence and calm authority
• Collaborate closely with other aftercare staff members and work effectively as part of a team
• Use sound judgment, flexibility, and a steady presence when supporting children

Qualifications and Core Competencies:

• Experience working with children in a school, camp, childcare, or related setting is highly desirable
• Seeking college students, adult professionals, or retired professionals
• Warm, patient, nurturing, and emotionally aware
• Creative and comfortable thinking outside the box
• Comfortable in leadership roles and guiding groups of children
• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work as part of a close-knit team
• Ability to motivate, guide, and be a positive role model
• Responsible and reliable—candidates must arrive on time and be prepared each day
• Calm demeanor, positive energy, and flexibility are essential
• Knowledge of or experience with Montessori education and/or Positive Discipline is a plus, but not required.
