Grades 5–8: The Purposeful Progression to IB

A Thoughtfully Scaffolded Education

Our International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme builds naturally on the foundation of the Lower School program by expanding students’ independence, curiosity, and sense of purpose in a more conceptual and globally centered way.

We prioritize how students learn — not just what they learn — by continuing to cultivate essential life skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and self-management, while fostering an appreciation for diverse perspectives and cultures. Within every unit of study, students explore big ideas through real-world application. They demonstrate interest and exercise choice as active participants in their own learning. A class might investigate the concept of revolution, for example, by researching different historical case studies and sharing their knowledge through presentations and discussions. Students don’t just learn about science and design; they think, create, and problem-solve like real scientists and engineers. The IB approach to assessment is particularly thoughtful, valuing not only what students know but how they apply their understanding, make connections, reflect on their learning, and demonstrate growth. This methodology deepens intellectual rigor while preserving the student-centered, inquiry-driven approach that prepares students to engage thoughtfully and fully with the world.

The IB Difference

Red Oaks is one of a select number of schools in the United States offering an Authorized IB Programme. More than a curriculum, the IB provides a coherent framework for rigorous learning: students connect knowledge across disciplines, investigate significant questions, consider diverse perspectives, apply their understanding to authentic problems, and reflect on how they learn. At a developmental stage when students are ready for greater independence but still benefit from structure and guidance, the program helps them become more purposeful, self-directed, and intellectually engaged learners.
