Coming to America
Last week, Ms. Spring's Individuals & Societies class had the pleasure of hearing the immigration stories of three parents in our Red Oaks community. Rosalia Zamudio (Maia's mom), Sanjay Anand (Shay's dad), and Tasneem Mirza (Zara's mom) did a fantastic job sharing their experiences with immigration and the process of naturalization. The children took notes and asked many questions during the presentations to deepen their understanding. It's also interesting to note that a number of our teachers, including Ms. Nely, are immigrants themselves. To complete the study of this topic, one of the homework assignments was for students to share his/her learning about the topic of naturalization and immigration with their families. A guided worksheet helped facilitate rich discussions among family members. This complete unit of study is a prime example of the distinctive and unique approaches to learning that is International Baccalaureate's signature Middle Years Programme. The study of immigration and the process of naturalization is global, relevant, and meaningful.
