Meet Abigail Martin!
In case you’ve been wondering who the new teacher is in Upper Elementary, wonder no more! Abby came to Red Oaks through American University’s MAT program and is fulfilling the practicum requirements of her teaching degree. When she has completed the program, she will be licensed to teach Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. While interning in our Upper Elementary classrooms, Abby is learning from three amazing teachers (Ms. Leanne, Ms. Sera, and Ms. Laura) in all academic disciplines, creating lesson plans, teaching, and observing best practices in education each day.
Abby’s observations about the quality of Red Oaks students and faculty are quite affirming. She is struck by the high level of independence and focus the students exhibit each day in the classroom. The ability to build relationships with students and see their growth is very different from her own experience as a student. “The Upper El functions like a little community,” remarked Abby.
Abby attended Columbia High School and Monmouth University. Her favorite activity is playing basketball and she played for both schools. While Abby’s undergraduate degree is in Business Management, she quickly discerned that teaching children and having the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s academic life were far more in line with her goals in life. We are happy to have Abby serve her internship with us!
