You may have heard, literally, a familiar voice booming from the 3rd floor of 21 Cutler Street. BJ Ward, acclaimed poet and longtime friend of Red Oaks, recently returned for an artist in residence poetry experience with our Upper Elementary students. After anointing our students with alter-ego names like “The Dangerous Ladybug,” “Motorcycle Mama,” and “Sweet Potato Powered Pokemon,” BJ Ward (aka Dr. Shenanigans) unleashed the poet in each student! Students explored how to use metaphor and personification while also learning the importance of using specific, vivid words. After some thoughtful revisions and guidance from BJ and Ms. Leanne (aka Dr. Brightlight), 3rd and 4th graders were able to create their own collection of poetry.
Many thanks to BJ Ward for sharing his knowledge and love of poetry with our students!
